Canine Health Tips of the Week
WHY NORTHERN BREEDS & OTHER DOGS MAY NEED ZINC

One of the more frequent ailments I note mentioned in dog discussion lists is zinc deficiency and its symptoms, seen in skin ailments.  This is called zinc responsive dermatosis.  The cause is a failure to absorb enough zinc from the diet.

Northern breeds including Siberian Huskies, Alaskan Malamutes and Canadian Inuit dogs are among the most susceptible. This helpful article describes the problem -- and what to watch out for when using zinc supplements.

SWEDISH RESEARCHERS LEARN LOTS ABOUT WORKING DOGS

Dogs are engaged in a wide variety of "jobs" as we've seen in this WDW News feature over the last few years.  As a result, dog breeders and trainers want better methods of finding the best working pups in a litter -- or at least the best working dog among a group of yearlings.   Unfortunately, many puppy temperament tests don't work as well as expected.

Now, researchers in Sweden and Denmark have done the most extensive study ever conducted on dog behavior.  Over three years, a standard behavior test was given to 15,329 dogs representing 164 breeds by the Swedish Working Dogs Association.  Five basic traits seen in all dog breeds were defined as follows:  "playfulness, curiosity/fearlessness, chase-proneness... sociability and aggressiveness."

A spectrum from boldness to shyness was seen, and that measure plays a key role in determining dogs that will typically be easier to train.
