Legally blind Oregon musher prepares for Iditarod 2004
RACHAEL SCDORIS MUST COMPLETE QUALIFYING RACES FIRST

Rachael Scdoris is a remarkable dog woman, a committed sled dog driver who drove her first team -- two of her dad's reliable older dogs -- when she was 8 years old.  Since that time she has won her first sled dog race, at age 12, became the youngest musher to finish a 500-mile race, at age 15, has graduated from high school -- and has worked out an arrangement with the Iditarod Trail Committee to let her run the race in 2004. 

What's so special?   Rachael has an eye disorder called achromatopsia that leaves her colorblind and with poor visual acuity.  She requested an accommodation that would allow two snowmobile drivers to serve as her eyes, warning her of problems on the trail. After long consideration at two meetings, the Iditarod committee granted her one sled dog driver and his or her dog team to accompany her to serve as her eyes. This musher must also be officially qualified to enter the Iditarod.  She made the second presentation to the race committee herself, remarkable for a young adult who just graduated from high school.  

The decision was not without controversy, but now that it is made most people are wishing her well.  Dan MacEachen, a seven-time Iditarod veteran, has agreed to be her "eyes." Her next task is to complete 500 miles of qualifying races. You will likely be reading more about her and her dogs in the future so we thought you'd like to meet her.
